Laboratory Preparation
Prepare the Vial
- Wash hands thoroughly.
- Clean the vial's rubber stopper with a fresh alcohol swab.
- Allow the stopper to air dry completely before puncturing.
Drawing Solution Into the Syringe
- Remove the syringe cap while maintaining sterility.
- Pull the plunger back to the desired volume to draw in air.
- Insert the needle through the vial stopper.
- Inject the air into the vial to equalize pressure.
- Turn the vial upside down while keeping the needle tip below the liquid level.
- Slowly withdraw the desired volume.
- Inspect the syringe for air bubbles.
Removing Air Bubbles
- Tap the syringe gently.
- Allow bubbles to rise toward the needle.
- Slowly depress the plunger until only solution remains.
- Verify the correct volume before removing the needle from the vial.
If excessive bubbles remain, return the solution to the vial and repeat the drawing process slowly.
Reading an Insulin Syringe
- Small graduation marks represent individual units, or two-unit increments depending on syringe type.
- Larger marks indicate 5- or 10-unit intervals.
- Always read the dose at the top edge of the black rubber stopper.
- Hold the syringe at eye level in adequate lighting for the most accurate reading.
- Verify the unit markings on your specific syringe before use, as manufacturers may vary.
General Laboratory Handling
- Maintain sterile technique whenever handling research materials.
- Use a new sterile syringe and needle for each preparation.
- Avoid touching the needle or vial stopper after sterilization.
